So my personal goals are set for the year. But my writing goals have been in limbo. Until Thursday night, anyway. During my somewhat weekly writing meeting with Kaye I pretty much defined my #2017WritingGoal: I want to have a submission ready manuscript in one year.
Big freaking goal.
But, when I break it down into smaller goals it looks like this:
Still a HUGE FREAKING GOAL. But it’s doable. Not easy by any estimation, but doable. Actionable. Within my control.

Yeah, I know I posted a few weeks ago that I decided to stop blogging. Still not my favorite. But for some reason I cannot identify I work more on my fiction when I keep to a blogging schedule. Weird.
So, July 1 I undertake two writing endeavors:
- I start Camp NaNoWriMo with a goal of 20,000 words on my story
- I return to my blog
I’ll be blogging three days each week. Most likely Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday. Sunday will probably usually be a weekend wrap up and a list of goals for the upcoming week. But not always.
Today-reading and writing on the menu. I must finish the book I’m currently reading. I’m enjoying the story. Took me a bit to get into it, but now that I am into I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. The book is Call of the Herald by Brian Rathbone.
But I also need to get some serious writing time in today. I’m going to do a couple of #1k1hr sprints this afternoon and evening.
This weekend I’m working on something I’ve never done before. I’m going to create an editorial calendar. The next month of my writing will be planned and written in my day book. I think this approach will help me stay on track with my goals both short term and long term.
I’ll write more about the process next week.

So at the beginning of the year I tasked myself with posting two blog posts per week with an eye to evaluate my progress mid-year and hopefully increase my posting frequency. Yeah, I’m not there yet. But I refuse to give up no matter how tired and lazy I become.
One tool I use, although not enough, is Evernote. I love that I can use it across platforms. I’m not sure anyone has fully tapped its versatility.
As soon as I post this blog I’m going to open my goals that I already set up in Evernote, evaluate where I am on each one, whether I want to keep each goal or not, and tweak the timetables on the ones I’m keeping. And maybe add one or two.

In working on meeting my goal of blogging three times a week, I’ve been trying to think of possible themes for certain days. For instance, I think Fridays will become “Gluten Free Friday.”
My plan is to blog routinely each Monday, Wednesday, Friday. I just can’t come up with a theme for Mondays and Wednesdays yet. But I will.
Some come back Friday for my first Gluten Free Friday.
This week I’m experimenting with my writing schedule. I’m trying to find some way to work out my day that will give me at least one uninterrupted hour to write. Not as easy as it sounds.
My thought for Tuesday, 1/3, was to get up an hour early, at 4 am, take the dog out, have a cup of coffee, feed the dog and cats, then be writing by 4:30 am. Not so much. What I failed to take into account was that a four-day struggle with insomnia would continue. Four hours of sleep after a hard day at work does not contribute to much of a word count.
I’m going to try again. We’ll see how it goes.
